Down five runs against cross county rival Sebastian River, Vero Beach had to sit out a half-hour rain delay and ponder their predicament.
When the rain stopped, the Fighting Indians got started on a 14-run rally and ended up beating the Sharks 15-7 at Holman Stadium in the fourth annual Dollars for Scholars Spring Baseball Classic.
“It was a wild game,” Vero Beach coach Bryan Rahal said as his team improved to 4-1.
“We were down 7-1 when the rain started but that gave us some time to get focused. When we got back on the field, we got going and turned things around,” the coach said.
Vero Beach finished the night with 14 hits led by senior center fielder Austin Green, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Chris Kazen doubled and drove in a run, Shawn Ramsey had two hits and two RBIs and Scotty Wright, Vinnie Patrick, Justin Enrico and Delaney Wilson each chipped in an RBI single.
Alex Dermody came on in relief in the first inning, and pitched until the sixth to pick up the win. He struck out six and gave up five hits.
Vero Beach will host Martin County at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
