Baseball: Green's 2-hitter sends Vero Beach by Centennial

Senior right-hander Reece Green pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 Friday as Vero Beach High School’s baseball team defeated St. Lucie West Centennial 6-0 in a District 6-8A in Vero Beach.

“Reece threw really well tonight,” Vero Beach coach Bryan Rahal said. “He was in command of all his pitches and he was in the strike zone all night.

“The defense also played very well behind him. Delaney Willson made a diving catch in right field to save a hit.”

The Fighting Indians (9-4, 2-1 district) scored all of their runs in the sixth inning on two walks, an error, a two-run single by John Corso and a single by Chris Kaven.

Ruben Garcia and Hunter Melton singled for the Eagles (4-9, 1-2).

Vero Beach will play in the Rip-It Spring Break tournament in Palm Coast starting Tuesday.

Vero Beach 13, Fort Pierce Central 2: Shawn Ramsey finished the day with two runs, four RBIs and two hits, including a grand slam to lead the Fighting Indians over the Cobras (1-12) in five innings at Vero Beach.

Jordyn Cruz was 3-for-3, including a double, with one RBI and two runs, and Scotty Wright had two hits and two RBIs for the Indians (8-4).

John Corso and Austin Green each added a double, while Chris Kazen and Delaney Willson each had two hits for Vero Beach.

Vero Beach hosts St. Lucie West Centennial 7 p.m. Thursday.

Vero Beach 9, Eau Gallie 3: Jordan Cruz was 2-for-3 with one home run, two RBIs and two runs to lead the Fighting Indians to a win in Melbourne.

Reece Green scattered four hits and struck out six in five innings for Vero Beach (6-2).

Christian Williams, Chris Kazen, and Scott Wright each added a double and an RBI.

Chris Wilson had two hits and James Fischer added two RBIs for Eau Gallie.

Vero Beach hosts Miami-Killian at 4 p.m. Friday.

            Vero Beach storms past Sebastian River
Fighting Indians rally from 5-1 deficit to win Dollars for Scholars game

Down five runs against cross county rival Sebastian River, Vero Beach had to sit out a half-hour rain delay and ponder their predicament.

 

When the rain stopped, the Fighting Indians got started on a 14-run rally and ended up beating the Sharks 15-7 at Holman Stadium in the fourth annual Dollars for Scholars Spring Baseball Classic.

 

“It was a wild game,” Vero Beach coach Bryan Rahal said as his team improved to 4-1.

 

“We were down 7-1 when the rain started but that gave us some time to get focused. When we got back on the field, we got going and turned things around,” the coach said.

 

Vero Beach finished the night with 14 hits led by senior center fielder Austin Green, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Chris Kazen doubled and drove in a run, Shawn Ramsey had two hits and two RBIs and Scotty Wright, Vinnie Patrick, Justin Enrico and Delaney Wilson each chipped in an RBI single.

 

Alex Dermody came on in relief in the first inning, and pitched until the sixth to pick up the win. He struck out six and gave up five hits.

 

Vero Beach will host Martin County at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 


VBHS Baseball Senior Night

The VBHS Senior Night has been scheduled for April 19th at the Reservation. 

We will be playing against Lincoln Park Academy at 7:00 pm.

The time for the pre-game ceremonies will be announced at a later date.

Dermody strikes out 8 in 5 innings as Vero Beach blanks Bayside

Alex Dermody allowed three hits and struck out eight in five innings Wednesday as Vero Beach High School's baseball team defeated Bayside 10-0 in Vero Beach.

Austin Green went 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs for the Fighting Indians (1-1).

"The kids had a great attitude tonight and came out ready to play after a hard-fought game last night," said Vero Beach coach Bryan Rahal, who collected his first win.

"We had a better plan at the plate and defensively we played great."

Shawn Ramsey doubled and drove in two runs for Vero Beach. Reece Green doubled, scored two runs and drove in one.

James Cotti doubled and Christian Ford recorded the loss for Bayside (0-2).

Vero Beach plays at Okeechobee at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

 


Vero Beach tops Heritage in preseason classic

Alex Dermody struck out six and gave up one hit in three scoreless innings to lead Vero Beach to a 6-3 win over Heritage in an FHSAA Preseason Classic baseball game at Vero Beach.

Delaney Willson pitched 1¥ innings, striking out three and giving up one hit, to get the save.

The Indians had six hits. Shawn Ramsey was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. John Coro, Austin Green and Jordyn Cruz all hit RBI singles.

In the second Classic game, Eau Gallie nipped Sebastian River 1-0.

On Tuesday, Vero Beach beat Eau Gallie 9-5. Indians starter Jarod Huff gave up a run and struck out seven in three innings for the win.

Four Vero Beach pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts.

At the plate for Vero Beach, Cruz went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, Scotty Wright was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Justin Fagan had an RBI single.

Vero Beach opens the regular season on Tuesday, hosting Astronaut at 6 p.m.
